Event Details

This session gives nonprofit leaders a practical overview of common risk areas and how to reduce liability without slowing down mission work. Participants will walk through a simple approach: identifying key risks, tightening documentation and policies, reviewing insurance coverage, improving training and onboarding, and setting a cadence to revisit and adjust as the organization changes.

This session will 

  1. Identify common nonprofit risk areas and liability exposures

  2. Explain how documentation and policies reduce risk when issues arise

  3. Recognize major nonprofit insurance categories and what they generally protect

  4. Describe the role of training/onboarding in preventing preventable issues

  5. Implement a simple “revisit and adjust” rhythm to keep risk practices current

Spencer Rehn, JD

In his career as a Nonprofit Attorney, Spencer Rehn has served over 400 nonprofits ranging from multi-entity large organizational structures to small startups. As trusted legal counsel, he has guided clients through navigating challenges in the nonprofit sector including board conflict, reorganization, mergers, litigation, and bankruptcy. But his passion is providing tailored legal solutions that take nonprofit client’s goals and mission into account while preventing risk and strategically solving problems.

He aims to make clients more sustainable and eHective at serving others while maintaining legal compliance. Spencer has a Juris Doctor from the Indiana University Robert H. McKinney School of Law and his undergraduate degree is from Purdue University. He has been admitted to the Indiana State Bar, the US Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit and the US District Courts for the Southern and Northern Districts of Indiana.
