Navigating Leadership Transitions with Confidence
Leadership transitions are one of the most vulnerable moments for a nonprofit organization.
When an executive director steps away, uncertainty can ripple through every part of the organization. Without clear structure and communication, transitions can quickly become overwhelming.
That is why many organizations rely on interim executive directors to help guide the organization through the transition period.
An interim leader provides stability. They keep operations moving, support staff, and help the board prepare for the organization’s next permanent leader. But even with an interim in place, nonprofits still need clarity about roles, expectations, and priorities during that time.
Recently, Nonprofit Support Network partnered with Purple Ink LLC to help local nonprofit leaders think more intentionally about this process.
Understanding the Role of an Interim Leader
In February, Kourtney McCauliff, Vice President of Contract Services at Purple Ink LLC, led a training called “Leading Through Transition: A Practical Guide to Interim Directors.”
The session focused on helping nonprofit boards and executive leaders understand what an interim leadership period should actually look like.
Participants explored questions many organizations face during a transition:
What should an interim executive director focus on during the first few months?
How does the board’s role change during a leadership transition?
What decisions should pause until a permanent leader is hired?
How can the organization use the interim period to prepare for long-term leadership success?
Rather than rushing into solutions, the training encouraged organizations to slow down and focus on stabilization, communication, and thoughtful preparation.
A Practical Toolkit for Leadership Transitions
To support organizations beyond the training, Purple Ink LLC developed a practical Interim Leadership Toolkit designed specifically for nonprofit boards and leaders navigating executive transitions.
The toolkit includes several tools that help organizations bring structure and clarity to what can otherwise feel like a chaotic time.
Resources include:
A Board Transition Readiness Reflection to help assess organizational stability
A Communication Map to guide clear and consistent messaging during the transition
A 30-60-90 Day Focus Guide to help interim leaders prioritize their early work
A Role Clarity Worksheet to define expectations and authority for the interim executive director
A Search Readiness Self Assessment to help boards determine when they are ready to begin the search for a permanent executive director
A comparison of Interim vs. Permanent Executive Director roles to clarify how the responsibilities of each position differ
These tools help boards and staff move through leadership transitions with greater confidence, transparency, and alignment.
If your organization is experiencing a leadership transition or wants to be better prepared for one in the future, the toolkit offers a practical starting point.
